Step 1 FEEL

The challenges or problems in our surroundings that bothered us are as below: 1) Water Wastage 2) Food Wastage 3) Electricity Consumption 4) Bullying 5) Body Shaming 6) Peer Pressure 7) Excessive use of Social Media by students 8) Waste Management 9) Car Pooling 10) Mental Health 11) Unhealthy Diet and lack of Physical Fitness

We have chosen the problem of “ Excessive use of Social Media” The reasons for choosing the above topics are: 1) Lack of socialisation amongst people. 2) The spirit of the festival celebrations are affected as more textual messages are sent than people meeting each other. 3) Cyber Crime is a major concern eg. Hacking an account, Cyber bullying, morphing pictures, making online friends. 4) It is affecting the young generation who are the future citizens of the country. 5) Addiction to Social Media. 6) Unawareness of the consequences of Cyber Crime. 7) Lack of knowledge to report a Cyber Crime in a Cyber Cell. 8) Deviation from focus on academics. 9) Outdoor Games are replaced by Social Media. 10) Affecting the family time. 11) There is more exploration of places virtually rather than physically.

We believe that the people affected by the problem were the students youth and the masses in general. Worldwide, all social media users are being affected by the problem but the most affected are the students and teenagers. Their Primary concerns were: 1) Ignorant and innocent users. 2) The elderly population trying to learn. 3) Lack of online security measures. 4) Carelessness of people regarding sharing their personal details online on any site without being aware of its pros and cons. 5) Addiction to social media as it is hampering and affecting the academic performance of the students. 6) Becoming victims of Cyber Crime. 7) Affects socialising with family and friends. 8) No family rules were set by parents on the usage of internet. 9) Affected their academics 10) Visiting unauthentic sites for playing games online.

Step 2 IMAGINE

We came up with the following solutions:- 1) Seminar for parents on “Responsible Netizens - A guide to Online Safety” was conducted from Classes I-XI which emphasized on monitoring the internet usage and safety norms to be followed on social media so that the children do not come across any kind of material that may not be suitable for their age group. The parents were also guided to set parental privacy settings on phones during the seminar. 2) Session on “Responsible Netizens” was organized with students explaining the difference between Cyber World and Real World. 3) Interviewing parents on usage of Social Media in their Families was conducted and what was the impact or changes brought about by them after attending the seminar. 4) Essay writing activity on “Social Networking Sites – a revolution to break out from one’s restrictions” was conducted and it was read out to peers. 5) Poster Making activity on ‘Netponsible’ was conducted and these posters were displayed for school students, visitors on the boards. 6) To create mass awareness and consciousness through Street Plays on “Healthy Usage of Social Media” were performed by students in public places like Malls, Outside Railway Stations and even in school premises 7) “Social Media” platform was created for visitors, parents, guests and students during Annual Exhibition Day where posters were displayed and parents interviews were conducted. Information regarding the healthy usage of social media was conveyed. 8) The DFC committee members conducted and interactive session with students from Classes VI to X on the Do’s and Dont’s of social media. 9) Pamphlets were distributed to students and adults regarding the precautions to be taken while using social media

We implemented all the above solutions mentioned in answer four. 1) The reason being that it will enable children, youth & adults to understand the power of technology and to use the same constructively. The initiative “Responsible Netizens - A guide to Online Safety” Sensitized all to protect them from internet abuse, threats and thus promote cyber security and online safety. 2) The street plays performed in malls, outside railway stations and even school premises educated the audience about the positive and the negative side of social media, and how we must be law-abiding and responsible users of the internet. 3) This medium would appeal to a huge crowd and a wide audience, teaching them a lot in a short time, in a very interesting and visually appealing manner. This imbibed a sense of satisfaction of having educated a lot of fellow citizens. 4) Seminars for parents were held within the school where parents were informed about the rules and safety measures one must take when on social media. 5) To bring in light the positive side of social media, a poster making activity on ‘Netponsible’ was held where students were paired for writing a slogan and making the poster. 6) Our core members had an interaction with students from Classes VI to X on how social media impacts our lives and what is its pro’s and con’s. 7) The Annual Exhibition of our school also championed the cause of ‘Correct usage of Social Media’ where the posters prepared were showcased to the parents. 8) Sessions with students were also held where they were educated about the various types of crimes that happen online and how we can prevent them. 9) Students were also encouraged to pen their thoughts on this topic and wrote impactful essays on the same. They read out their essays to the students from Classes VI to X. 10) Pamphlets were distributed which mentioned about the precautions to be taken by adults and students while using the social media. 11) All the above measures were most interactive and involved the people and hence they found it interesting which helped in spreading the message more efficiently.

Step 3DO

Ans:- Rome was not built in a day and neither was our whole campaign. Perseverance and determination went into making this a success. We implemented our solution through various activities conducted in our school as well as the neighbourhood. Activities like poster making, essay writing were held with the students and workshops were organized. Students were prepared thoroughly for the street play and practice for the same was held on a daily basis. Street plays were performed by the students outside railway stations and malls to create awareness about cyber safety and the pros and cons of the internet to the general public. Flyers containing certain pointers about the dos and dont’s of social media were also distributed among students, teachers, visitors and the general citizens. Organization of the Exhibition was also a grand success where the street play was put up for the attendees. Slowly yet steadily all these activities were held and compiled to make the ‘Design For Change’ campaign a huge success. Social media is a very critical topic and plays an important part in a youth’s life. They feel there stands no purpose living in the moment if they do not click a photo and share it to the world. And so the true purpose behind social media needs to be brought in light. Session on effective usage of social media was conducted for students as well as their parents. This made them more aware about various crimes committed on the internet. Established workers in the fields like digital marketing and software engineering interacted with students making them understand about the intricacies of each social media platform and how each act committed on the internet stays on the internet forever.

The mission of our project was to spread the ‘True Message’ of social media and all the above stated activities had become one large project of ‘Design for change’ which made a great impact. The results were positive and the feedback we got was surely an achievement. We were successful in making people aware about the Do’s and Dont’s and awakening them to see the reality beneath the beauty that blinds and victimizes the innocent mind. Our motive was not to stop the use of social media but to use in the correct way and not as a platform to bully, commit crimes or waste our time. Parents were made aware of what their child could be doing and how to prevent them from doing the wrong things. Young minds were educated on this topic as they stand next in line to step into the world of social media. The real purpose of social media was brought to light that how it is a platform for talents, connection and, in its own sense, togetherness. In and all an Impact was made on students, teachers, parents and the whole of the community. People got more aware about how internet can be harmful too. Students started using social media in an appropriate manner and for a good reason. Students spread this message to the people who were unaware and made this project extremely successful. We were indeed pleased to receive a positive response to our project. It was truly satisfying to interact with the audience that watched our street play. They went home much more wiser. Moreover, this information would soon pass by word of mouth, hence influencing a number many times more than the crowd that watched our street play. People whom we addressed had now become completely aware about the pros and cons of social media as well as its harmful effects. They had now learnt how to use the internet effectively. Our project taught them about cyber cell and cyber crimes, helping them to keep themselves safe from hackers and other cyber criminals. They had now been educated on what is to be done if one is a victim of a cyber crime or how to avoid being a victim of it. Moreover approximately 30% students had now restricted their online time as they had understood the harmful effects of social media. Parents on the other hand were no longer helpless in front of social media and had found means to monitor, restrict and control their child’s internet usage. Thus our project helped better the lives of many people. The parent body appreciated the efforts taken by the school as students understand any message that is given from school very well then told by the family members or parents. They felt that school should take up more such projects.

More than 900

The impacted people for our project were the parents, students, visitors, the general public and students of our neighbouring school. Parents – The parents were very appreciative of the seminar ‘Responsible Netizens’ - A guide to Online Safety because it was an eye opener for them. This seminar gave them the means to control their child’s internet usage and keep them safe online. Students – The session with students will also go a long way as they had to say that now they were aware about the do’s and don’ts of social media and in future they will be cautious about the usage of social media. General Public – The people who witnessed the street play had to say that it is so heartening to see that children today are able to educate us about the pros and cons of such a relevant topic as Social Media in such a simple way. The testimonials are as follows: 1) Parents of Koyal Bajoria (Class X): • The programme was designed in such a way that the impact is left on the mind of the viewers and it will be long lasting. • The programme ‘Design for Change’ has really changed the way of thinking of the viewers and the efforts laid by both teachers and students are remarkable as it was such a beautiful way of Conveying the message. • Salute to all Teachers, Students and School and a humble request to take up more and more such initiatives to create awareness amongst the people on various other topics. 2) Parents of Aneesha Sreekanth (Class X): • It was so awesome to see the kids put across so many aspects of the internet in so few lines. It was encouraging to see parents and visitors stopping by to take notice and appreciating their efforts too. 3) Visitors on the street: • It is really very true message given by the street play. These children are doing a good job by spreading awareness on such an apt topic.

Every project has to face some challenges before it becomes successful. So did this project. We faced the following challenges while implementing our project: • It took time for people to understand the harmful effects of social media. • Especially, the teenagers were not completely ready to accept what was said. • Students were not ready for our inputs when we first began. • Students refused to pay attention to our messages and did not realize how important our project was. • They were not ready to accept that social media needs to be used in a limited way. • While implementing our project many people especially students seemed uninterested in our presentations as they believed that they knew everything. • Many were also reacting to our project in a negative manner saying that what we say doesn’t really matter or will make a difference. • Some simply ignored us by saying that nothing can be avoided on the internet. • The main challenge faced was to be heard. To stand at a public place and make people listen to you where we used our communication skills & soft skills was not an easy task. However, the visual devices, that is, props and banners, used by us also attracted the attention of the audience. These problems were solved by providing real life examples to the people which made them believe that “YES, HEALTHY AND POSITIVE USAGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS VERY IMPORTANT.” We also used real life cases that had occurred due to ignorance on social media so that people would understand how important it is to be safe on social media. We worked hard and will keep working on this in future also to overcome the challenges by; • Not giving up. • Explaining them our motive with help of real life examples. • Spreading our message in every possible way. From then on, the project was a smooth success.

MORE THAN 30 DAYS

Good health and well being

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Addiction to Social Media has resulted in lack of Socialisation and has adversely affected the family life too. It has resulted in lack of personal touch amongst people. The future citizens (i.e. the young generation) is addicted to Social Media resulting in deviation from focus on academics. Outdoor games and physical activities are replaced by Social Media which again results in poor health and lifestyle. Due to the current scenario with regards to excessive use of Social Media, we think that this topic will surely help to educate the students to use social media wisely and for a healthy cause.

Step 4 SHARE

The project was shared with students, parents, visitors and common man in the following way: 1. We conducted seminars with parents from Classes I to XI. 2. Street plays were conducted for students, parents and the common man. 3. Peer talk - Session by DFC Committee Members with the students of Classes V to XI. 4. Essay Writing on the topic Social Media was conducted and the Essays were read out to the other Classes from VI to XI. 6. An interactive session on Social Media was conducted by a resource person discussing the safe usage of Social Media. 7. A pamphlet on a 'Guide to Online Safety' was distributed to the parents, visitors and common man on the streets. We got a very good and positive response from everyone: Parents – The parents were very appreciative of the seminar ‘Responsible Netizens’ - A guide to Online Safety because it was an eye opener for them.
