Step 1 FEEL

In a class discussion to decide DFC story students came up with the following issues:- I) lot of people losing lives in road accidents. II) Rising deaths due to heart attack and Ignorance regarding CPR. III) Rising menace of swine flu, dengue and malaria in Nashik.

In class discussion one of our classmate shared that he lost both his grandfathers to heart attack. Students got worried about the health of their parents and increasing fear of heart attack in adults working under stress. We decided to create awareness for CPR and specially encourage students to be lifesavers for heart attack victims. We felt that children should be more responsible at the time of medical emergency and instead of panicking they should become life savers. Our motto is to develop at least one life saver in each family.

In our country where our Ex President Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam did not get CPR on the spot , leaves a big question mark on our preparedness to deal with Heart attack There has been significant rise in deaths due to heart attack in India. Generally people are working under stress and the ones who ignore their health are at risk of suffering from a heart attack. Though it is difficult to predict heart attack it is always better to be prepared to deal with such a situation if at all it arises. In most cases heart attack victims do not get any help till the time they reach hospital which often proves fatal for the patient.

Step 2 IMAGINE

I) We decided to write a letter to government(Health Minister) to intervene and reduce the expenses of health check ups & heart surgeries. II) To make yoga and meditation compulsory in all workplaces to ensure stress free working environment and healthy life. III) Creating awareness for CPR as first aid for heart attack.

We aimed at creating awareness for CPR .We understood that if a man suffers from heart attack at home, then children start crying and panicking. The mother is confused whether to attend the patient or console the children. At this moment if children will behave responsible and cooperate than the survival rate of patient will definitely increase. So we undertook the following steps:- I) We did live demonstrations of CPR in our school and other schools to make students, teachers and parents aware of CPR. II) We composed a rap song to help people easily understand the procedure of CPR and performed live on air at Radio city 95 FM. III) We also recorded a video of students performing CPR on mannequin and uploaded it on facebook & youtube to further create awareness on social media. IV) Students identified workplaces where people are working under high pressure and stress and communicated the procedure of CPR to the employees like the police officers and bus drivers. V) We did live demonstrations of CPR at public gatherings to create more awareness for CPR.

Step 3DO

I) The students firstly got in touch with a group of doctors who are working to create awareness for CPR. II) Students first understood the procedure of CPR to become life savers and then decided to create awareness for CPR. III) To make CPR more popular students did live demonstrations of CPR on mannequin at various spots and used social media to further create awareness. IV) Students identified workplaces where people are working under high stress and conducted demonstration & special awareness program for CPR. V) Students also made a questionnaire on CPR to ensure that people have understood the procedure of CPR properly.

We got a very warm and positive response from everyone. People were amazed and inspired by the young students performing CPR with so much confidence. Our school parents expressed their happiness and shared that they feel more confident & safe because children are aware of CPR procedure and are now trying to become life savers . The involvement of students in this project had an emotional impact on parents.Parents felt more conscious about their health and realized the importance of being stress free and healthy for their families. Everyone appreciated the idea of children becoming life savers at the time of medical emergency and even expressed their willingness to know more about CPR. Few NGOs also approached us as this project helped us to make many people aware of the life saving first aid CPR.

10000

I) Mother of our student Mrunmayee shared with us that she is really happy that we have undertaken this challenge of creating awareness for CPR. She lost her husband to heart attack but now she is proud that her daughter is trying to defeat heart attack and become a life saver. II) Grand father of one of our students, Garg shared that he feels so proud and safe because his granddaughter is trying to become a life saver at the time of medical emergency.

I) In the initial stage doctors were not convinced with the idea of students doing CPR. They feared that students might do any mistakes while explaining CPR procedure and thereby spread wrong information. We then convinced doctors to have confidence in the I CAN philosophy of DFC. We convinced doctors to have confidence in our students. The doctors were finally convinced and decided to attend our first few sessions to keep a complete check on how the students were performing and explaining CPR . II) To transform panic into a responsible behavior was challenging. People were skeptical about attending a heart attack victim. They feared that they could harm the patient instead of saving them. We encouraged everyone to understand the correct procedure of CPR and try to become life savers instead of being mute spectators. III) We created awareness that CPR is a life saving procedure and does not have any side effects.

MORE THAN 30 DAYS

Good health and well being

Heart attack is a serious medical concern now a days. With so many people losing their lives to heart attack we feel that creating awareness for CPR is the need of the hour. Health and well being of so many people can be ensured if people around the heart attack victims have knowledge of CPR. Involvement of children had a positive impact because parents were stimulated emotionally to take care of their health and lead a happy, healthy and stress free life.

Step 4 SHARE

I) We did live demonstrations of CPR in schools to make students, teachers and parents aware of CPR and encouraged everyone to become life savers for heart attack victims. II) We composed a rap song to help people easily understand the procedure of CPR and performed live on air at Radio city 95 FM to share the procedure of CPR with common people. III) We did live demonstrations of CPR on mannequin at various workplaces where people are working under high stress like police department and public transport. We specially trained police officers and bus drivers of city buses to give CPR as first aid to heart attack victims. IV) Students also made a questionnaire on CPR to ensure that people have understood the procedure of CPR properly. V) We also recorded a video of students performing CPR on mannequin and uploaded it on Facebook & youtube to further create awareness on social media. We shared our project with students , teachers , parents ,general public and created awareness for CPR in workplaces where people are working under high pressure and stress. Our motto to develop at least one life saver in each family was very well received by everyone. People realized the importance of CPR and its role in saving the life of heart attack victim. They showed interest in knowing about the procedure of CPR and expressed their willingness to become life savers.

More than 100

We plan to sustain the project by-: I) Regular demonstrations of CPR at public gatherings like marathons and cultural events. II) We are aiming to cover more workplaces where people are working under stress and create awareness for CPR among employees. III) We will keep on sensitizing school children about CPR so that they can develop as life savers and encourage their parents to lead a happy, stress free life. IV) We will continuously use social media to further spread awareness for CPR
